Graphic Design

Students will transform their classrooms into an art studio as they will be tasked with designing an electronic cookbook page for the world’s most delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe. This activity will introduce students to the fun world of graphic design, which encourages creativity at every turn. Participating students will learn how to use Google Drawing.

Time required to complete this activity: approximately 60-90 minutes.

*PREREQUISITES: to register for this activity you will need access to the internet, and a computer/tablet for each student.

Baking Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Baking Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (creating and decorating shortbread cookies), you MUST have access and be able TO PROVIDE EACH GROUP with: an oven, oven mitts, baking trays/sheets, rolling pin, mixer, cookie cutters, parchment paper, saran wrap, and piping bags and piping tips.

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, you are able to use the funds Skills Canada – Nova Scotia to purchase the rest of the required materials*. The funds will be used TO PROVIDE EACH GROUP (3-5 students) with: butter (400g), salt (8g), sugar (300g), vanilla (15ml), egg whites (170g), lemon juice (4ml), milk (25ml), all purpose flour (750g), icing sugar (1kg), variety pack of food colouring and two eggs.

Carpentry Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Carpentry Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (building a footstool), you MUST be (or have the support of) a Tech-Ed or Skilled Trades teacher. That teacher MUST supervise the activity and ensure students receive all safety training required. As well, you MUST be able to provide the students with a suitable space, mitre saw, drill press, jigsaw, hammer, clamp, compass, nail set, 1” spade bit, tape measure, and combination square. EACH STUDENT participating in the activity MUST be provided safety glasses.

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, you are able to use the funds from Skills Canada – Nova Scotia to purchase the rest of the required materials*. The funds will be used TO PROVIDE EACH STUDENT with: sandpaper, pencil, rag, 6d finish nails (22), 1x10x16” pine board (1 piece), and 1x4x4-0 pine board (1 piece).

Cooking Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Cooking Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (creating an omelette), you MUST have access and be able TO PROVIDE EACH STUDENT with: a stove top, two frying pans of any size, knife, plate, cutting board, cheese grater, spatula, whisk, and mixing bowl.

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, you are able to use the funds Skills Canada – Nova Scotia to purchase the rest of the required materials*. The funds will be used TO PROVIDE EACH STUDENT with: cheese of choice (75g), butter, seasoning of choice, salt and pepper, a stalk of green onion, spinach, three button mushrooms, two eggs, and bacon (optional).

Graphic Design Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Graphic Design Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (creating a cookbook-style recipe page for chocolate chip cookies), you MUST have access and be able TO PROVIDE EACH STUDENT with: the internet and a computer/tablet.

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, additional resources the students will NEED to access to complete the activity are: Google Drawing, Pexel.com (Free Photo Library), Unsplash.com (Free Photo Library), Freepik.com (Free Photo & Graphics Library), loose paper, and pencil/marker.
Machining Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Machining Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (building a coat hook), you MUST be (or have the support of) a Tech-Ed or Skilled Trades teacher. That teacher MUST supervise the activity and ensure students receive all safety training required. As well, you MUST be able to provide the students with a suitable space, drill press with vise, bench vise, tapping fluid/lubricating oil, 5/16” drill bit, 3/16” drill bit, 6” flat smooth file (2), 5/8” countersink, centre drill, ball peen hammer, tape measure, fine tip black marker. EACH STUDENT participating in the activity MUST be provided safety glasses.

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, you will receive a supply kit with the remaining required materials. You will receive: letter stamp kit, centre punch (2), 3/8”-16 starter tap (6 piece), tap handle to fit 3/8-16” tap (2), 3/8”-16 die, die handle to fit 3/8”-16 die, metal ruler, 3/8”x1 ½”x4” aluminum flat bar (1 per student), 3/8” round bar (1 per student), and 3/8”-16 nut (1 per student).
Robotics Try-A-Trade® Take-Out*

To register for the Robotics Try-A-Trade® Take-Out activity (building a Wigglybot), you MUST have access and be able TO PROVIDE EACH STUDENT with: a pair of scissors, and plyers (optional).

If you are able to guarantee access to all of the listed supplies and materials above, you will receive a supply kit with the remaining required materials. Your class will receive a glue stick and roll of tape to complete the activity. EACH STUDENT will receive: disposable cup (1), popsicle stick (1), clothespin (1), pencils (3), AAA batteries (2-4), AAA battery holder (1), 1.5-3 V DC motor (1), and google eyes (2).
